Overreacting much?
I’m always hearing how everyone hates Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana) because she can’t act, she can’t sing, or she’s racist –making fun of Asian people.
I’m half-Asian or Pacific Islander or whatever you want to call it. And the picture she took, making “chinky-eyes” or “slanted-eyes” doesn’t bother me in the slightest bit at all. (In fact, there is one other guy in the picture doing the same thing as Miley and I haven’t heard of him getting shit or being sued for it.)
Maybe the pictures and poses weren’t taken in the best taste, but it looked like it was a big joke to them. They don’t look like they’re trying to spread hate and insult all Asian people; they look like they’re having fun joking around with each other. Maybe the person with the camera said: “Hey guys, do something (stereotypically) Asian!” and everyone complied. I don’t know, and I don’t think it really matters.
And how can everyone say Miley Cyrus is racist over one picture?
Do you know her in person? Unless you do, then you will never know.
You’re insulted? Well guess what. Ever been on facebook? They have little chain-notes and quizzes saying: How Asian are you? How Korean are you? With certain stereotypes in each to choose from.
Many Asian/Korean people take these quizzes, as do people of non-Asian descent. But does that make them racist? NO. No, it doesn’t. Maybe they thought the quiz was funny or something. And the quizzes are kind of funny too, because some of those stereotypes are shockingly true, and people can relate to that.
No matter how paranoid you are, you have to understand that not everything is done to spite another person.
People need to stop accusing someone who happens to do something that another person considers racial.
Everyone in that picture is doing something stereotypically Asian. But who cares?
If everyone is overreacting for this one little picture, then people need to: Stop. Step back. And look at themselves.
Think: Why do I even care?
I know for a fact that hundreds of people do the things that the people did in that picture. They make "chinky-eyes" or do peace signs and cover their mouth. Some of them are Asian and others are not. But why should that matter? Want to know something? It doesn't.
People saw it and thought it was racist.
She apologized. TWICE.
Honestly, I have to stress that she APOLOGIZED TWICE. She wasn’t trying to hurt anyone’s feelings.
You say that apologizing isn’t enough? Well, that’s pretty much all she can do.
Handing over money to Asian people isn’t going to do anything. People who are trying or tried or did sue her for the picture are voracious and greedy. Suing her isn’t going to do anything. The people who are doing that are just taking advantage of something that she did that they didn’t deem “appropriate”.
She has a life too, so leave her alone.
She’s just a kid. She’s 16.
And maybe that isn’t an excuse, but still. People are blowing this way out of proportion.
So what if she’s famous? That doesn’t make her any less different than me or you. That just means she gets more shit for little mistakes that are often over-looked for a “normal-person”. She has drama to deal with, heartache, pain, issues, and LIFE.
She wasn't encouraging people to make fun of Asian/Pacific Islander people. She looked like she was part of a joke, having fun with friends.
Does the one Asian guy in the picture look like he's fipping out? No, he doesn't. If anyone has the right to be insulted or angry it's him. HE IS THE ONE PERSON WHO, IF ANYONE, SHOULD BE OFFENDED. And I don't know anything about him, but it doesn't look like he's upset about it.
Next time you look at something and say: “Wow, they only have one ‘White/African American/Asian’ person, that’s so racist.” or “That’s racist against Asians: they’re doing the peace symbol.” or anything along those lines. Stop yourself. That’s YOU being stereotypical. That’s YOU being judgmental. That’s YOU being racist.
It doesn’t matter what color the people are or what they’re doing in any picture because no matter what: It’s still JUST a picture. And each picture has its own story. (Often, which are inside-jokes amongst friends.)
So get over it. Take a chill pill. Just stop it.
All I know is, if a “non-famous” person were to be attacked like this, over something that seemed so trivial, they would probably have a mental breakdown. I commend Miley Cyrus for staying strong and focusing on her life. You go girl! Just do what you do, and always have fun.
MY MESSAGE:
There will always be haters and critiques who try to being you down.
People will always be judgmental.
We can’t help it: it’s in our nature. But you can’t always let what other people say bring you down. Sure, it’s going to hurt –I know it does. But in the end, you have to get over it. YOU have to keep moving on with your life. YOU have to live.
Do you think she woke up and said: “I’m going to try to offend Asian people.”
No, no she didn’t. So get over it. Stop overreacting.
P.S.
I apologize to anyone who reads this and is offended by what I'm saying and disagrees. This is my opinion, and I've always believed that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm not trying to sway your opinion, just give you another point of view. I'm using my freedom of speech to say what I think. And if you're insulted, all I can say is sorry, and I hope you toughen up and get over it.
As an inside joke between me and my friends, we say: You can cry me a river. Build a bridge. And get over it.
Because seriously...overreacting to every little mistake is unhealthy. Just go with the flow and have FUN! WOOHOO!
